Dick James began his music career in 1936, at 15, singing in a North London dance band. After the war, he sang with many of the leading British bands, but quit touring in 1953 to join the publishing staff of Sydney Bron. Meanwhile, he sang the theme to the television series Robin Hood, a 1955 session produced by George Martin. In 1960, he set up his own publishing company which was given a spectacular boost in October, 1962, when George Martin put him in contact with Brian Epstein to publish songs for the Beatles and future NEMS artists. James then set up Page One Records, with Larry Page, in November, 1965, scoring immediately with the Troggs’ ‘Wild Thing’. Four years later, when James and Page parted company, he set up DJM. His luck and judgment continued - in James’s studios cutting demos was Reg Dwight, whom James teamed with Bernie Taupin to launch another English rock phenomenon, Elton John.
